A protocol for the use of biomarker-guided antibiotic therapy

The presentation discusses the experience of an ICU in adopting the use of procalcitonin in daily clinical practice. Dr. Suberviola indicates that the diagnostic and prognostic usefulness of procalcitonin is optimized with serial determinations and that, despite its limitations, it is superior to the rest of the markers currently used in clinical practice. He also claims that, through PCT, antibiotic consumption can be safely reduced in selected cases.
