TREATMENTS

Depending on the evolution of the sepsis, it is likely that your family member will undergo various treatments in order to control and prevent the progression of the process:

ANTIMICROBIAL TREATMENT

Objective: Remove the infection

Once diagnosed, the first treatment is to eliminate the infection that has triggered the sepsis with antibiotics (or with antifungals and antiparasites in case the sepsis did not have a bacterial origin).

Control of the source of infection

Objective: Avoid progression and accelerate recovery

In all patients with severe sepsis, the presence of a focus of infection that can be eliminated with the most appropriate technique (access drainage, surgery, etc.) must be evaluated.

OTHER TREATMENTS

Objective: Ensure vital functions

It is possible that the patient needs other complementary support treatments for the organs that are affected and do not perform their function well, for example, dialysis to help the kidneys or a respirator to maintain adequate respiratory function.

WILL IT RESPOND TO TREATMENT?

Sepsis is a serious process that is difficult to predict since several factors affect the patient's response to treatment:

  • Time from detection and start of treatment
  • Know the causative infection for its correct treatment (some infections are resistant to antibiotics).
  • The general condition of the patient before sepsis.
