Contingency Plan for Intensive Medicine Services in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic

A problem identified in China during the COVID-19 epidemic was the shortage of trained personnel to treat critically ill patients.

The difficulty of having adequate protective equipment and using it correctly was also identified.

Intensive Medicine Services and professionals for critically ill patients must provide an adequate, programmed and organized response for the health care of patients with severe COVID-19, coordinated by our Scientific Societies, in close collaboration with health authorities.

Therefore, the objectives of the contingency plan, developed in this document, are mainly:

  1. Ensure optimal care for patients affected by COVID-19 in serious condition, and for the rest of the critical patients who present other pathologies.
  2. Limit the nosocomial spread of COVID-19 to protect healthcare personnel and ICU patients and prevent the hospital from being an amplifier of the disease.
  3. Optimize the human resources of the Intensive Medicine Services.
  4. Allocating limited health care resources in a rational, ethical, and organized manner to do the greatest good for the greatest number of people.
